Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
