The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or imploding.
The Youngster's Unexpected Presence
One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.
He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His True Position
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
