Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
